About Coaching

"When you walk to the edge of all the light you have and take that first step into the darkness of the unknown, you must believe that one of two things will happen: There will be something solid for you to stand upon, or, you will be taught how to fly."
- Patrick Overton

Question: I hear a lot about coaching on programs like Oprah and in magazines like Fortune 500 But I am still not clear what coaching is?

Answer: Yes, successful people like Oprah Winfrey and top CEO's are interested in coaching. In fact, more and more people all the time are turning to coaching for support. The reason for this is that, whether it is in your business or your personal life, coaching helps people simplify, prioritize and successfully grow more quickly. The coaching relationship assists the client in cutting through the confusion where they are feeling stuck. Through the process of supporting someone on an individual basis, the coach helps that person stay accountable to reach their goals. With coaching you are essentially getting support from an outside objective person who has been trained and is skilled in the area of actively listening to you and then can offer you the tools and perspective for the needed solutions. Together you and the coach co-create and design very clear strategies, action plans and sustainable environments to achieve practical measurable results. Simply coaching helps and encourages people to become stronger, more confident, more abundant, and more joyfully passionate about all areas of their lives. Partnering with a coach, you have someone who is really your cheerleader - who is on your team and wants the best for you.

Question: Why would someone want to hire a coach?

Answer: There are a variety of the reasons why someone would want to hire a coach that are as unique as the clients themselves. Mostly people essentially want support and guidance for getting through the stuck places in their lives such as prosperity issues or issues of self worth. But there are also people who are relatively happy in their life and they are inspired to work with a coach because they want to take their business or something in their life to the next level and they are not sure how to do that. Then there are people who want to up-level their current relationships or they might want to get into a new relationship. Or a person may need assistance in letting go of something in their lives because it no longer serves them or because they feel overwhelmed and out of control. A simple example of this would be getting rid of clutter and handling disorganization. Ultimately, I know people are attracted to working with me because they want to transform their life in some way.

Question: How do you work with somebody to help them move through their issues?

Answer: I support empowering my clients to deal with what's in the way to take the next steps toward what they want most in their lives. The first thing I do is to help the client get clear on their goals and their values. Secondly, together we come up with an action plan for making those goals happen in alignment with those values. This part of the process often involves gaining new perspectives and implementing supportive tools that the client can consistently rely on with a sense of ease and calm. Finally and most importantly, I support them in listening to their own inner guidance. We've all heard that the answers are within. I believe in the mental, physical and spiritual wholeness of my clients and I know they essentially have everything they need to achieve their treasured dreams. The ultimate goal of the coaching relationship is to assist the client in remembering their wholeness.

Question: Where do you do this coaching?

Answer: Conveniently, coaching is most often done over the phone, and sessions can be a half-hour or an hour long. Depending on where a client is in his or her life, sessions can be weekly, bi-monthly or whatever the client needs.

Question: How would I know in measurable results that working with a coach has helped me and / or my business?

Answer: Simply, the bottom line is that your life, your relationships, your business and how you feel about yourself would get better. You would sense improvement or at least have a feeling of forward movement. And most importantly, you would have more confidence in yourself and your abilities to create the life you want.

Of course, it is important to remember that especially in our western culture, many of us want the quick fix and I wish I could say that quantum leaps were always possible or even advisable. However, true sustainable transformation often takes time. It is my experience that for most people, if we are changing patterns and making big steps in our lives, it doesn't happen overnight. What I usually suggest is for my clients is that they begin with at least a 3 month commitment in order to start seeing significant results. It is well worth the investment.

Question: Coaching sounds like therapy or counseling. Is that true?

Answer: This is a question that is often asked. No - coaching is not therapy though it is often therapeutic. And within the coaching profession we are very careful about that distinction. In therapy, a person may be dealing with long standing psychological issues rooted in their past or addictive issues or even personality disorders that only a therapist can help them with. In coaching, you are working with an issue in present time and figuring out the action plan to go forward. So the short answer is that the focus of therapy is fixing a past problem, while coaching maximizes future potential. If I feel a person has a psychotherapeutic issue, I always refer them out. And, I have worked with clients who are also working with a therapist at the same time. Interestingly, there are a growing number of therapists who are either becoming coaches or are adding coaching to their therapeutic practice.

Question: But strong feelings or emotions must come up in coaching as well. How do you deal with that?

Answer: Of course emotions come up when you are feeling stuck. Many coaches are trained to support their clients to deal with challenging emotions, feelings and limiting beliefs with a variety of tools. It is my belief that energy tools such as Emotional Freedom and Healing (EF&H), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT), Chakra clearing, Z point release and Be Set Free Fast (BSFF) are some of the most effective ways to shift troublesome emotional issues. I am certified and knowledgeable in facilitating all of these techniques and have found them to be significantly helpful to my clients. (Links will be added in the future with more information about some of these powerful energetic techniques.)

Question: If my life is going really well, does that mean I don't need a coach?

Answer: "Some would say that self-coaching is an oxymoron, or at least mutually exclusive. Sure, you can do it to a degree, but is it really coaching at that point? The whole idea around coaching is to bring someone else into the mix and have their presence, observations and wisdom affect us profoundly."
~ Thomas Leonard, widely regarded as "the father" of coaching

"In our deepest moments of struggle, frustration, fear and confusion,
we are being called on to reach in and touch our hearts.
Then, we will know what to do... what to say... how to be.
What is right is always in our deepest heart of hearts."

- Roberta Sage Hamilton
